What Should A DUI Attorney Do for You?

One Saturday night, you went out to party, but by the end of the night, you had one too many drinks. Yet, you insisted you were fine and drove yourself home. As it turned out, you weren’t fit to drive and a police officer pulls you over. To cap off your night, you are slapped with a DUI (Driving Under the Influence) charge.

What’s the next step? Sure, the thought of defending yourself will cross your mind, but please don’t. You might just aggravate the situation further and dip yourself more in hot water. Are you a lawyer? If you’re not, then you don’t have any business defending yourself from a DUI charge now, do you? So, the best thing you can do is hire a DUI attorney and let him represent you.

Yes, you will spend more cash for hiring a DUI lawyer, but you might end up paying more if you don’t. Besides, a DUI attorney has the experience and skills to handle such cases. They know the DUI laws inside and out. However, don’t think that having a lawyer by your side is an escape route for you. They’re not there to simply get you out of trouble. More likely, they’re there to help you lessen the weight of the consequences of your actions.

Before the trial, you and your DUI lawyer will do a pre-trial conference, where you talk about your plead—guilty or not guilty. There, your DUI attorney will also explain to you what options you have and how your side will go about the defense in court.

Of course, a DUI lawyer will do everything he can to reduce the charges against you, but you should also be cooperative. What are some of the things that can possibly reduce DUI charges? For one, your lawyer might tell you that you are advised to take medication, prescribed or legal medications. Also, your lawyer might look around for witnesses to testify that you’re doing fine before the arrest was made. Further, you can point the blame back on the arresting office, saying that the breathalyzer test had discrepancies.

Your approach will depend on what you and your DUI lawyer agrees upon and you have to stick to the plan too. But if you really want a cheaper and hassle-free way of dealing with a DUI, without the need for a DUI attorney, then don’t drive under the influence. Ride with a friend or have a designated driver if you know you’ll be drinking.
