Ways to Avoid Expensive Car Repair Mistakes

Nearly half of those who already do their own car repairs say that they are doing the job well. But there are car repair mistakes that even the most seasoned do-it-yourselfers can make. Whether you like to go under the hood or take your vehicle to the shop, you can avoid some expensive car repair mistakes by following these simple tips.

·         Maintenance and minor repairs. Ignoring simple preventive maintenance, like changing the engine oil and filter, could damage your engine and replacing that engine could cost more than the ones they spend for maintenance. Failing to make minor car repairs today, such as replacing a thermostat or front brake pads, could mean more expensive car repairs tomorrow. These are just some simple tasks that car owners can do to avoid further damages.

·         Paying attention to overheating. Misinformed owners might reason that if the coolant reserve is at a good level, there is no cause of alarm. Not so, because if that is the case and overheating occurs, there are deeper problems to diagnose. However, in this simple task, owners get to become a step closer to avoiding expensive car repairs.

·         Always ask for your old parts. If you have a mechanic replace something on your car, make sure to ask for your old part back. Additionally, ask that the old part be placed in the box for the new part. This confirms the old part was removed and the new installed. Unfortunately, there are some unethical people who may try to charge you for work not done correctly, and it could end up costing you double if you have to pay for the repair all over again.

·         Address primary concerns. Not addressing primary concerns first is a big no-no in care repair. Technicians often spend an inordinate amount of time looking for easy sells that will fatten their paychecks. There’s nothing wrong with this provided there’s no charge for the inspection, it doesn’t conflict with your time, and the upsell suggestions are valid.

When it comes to car repairs, get a second opinion. If you are quoted a price that seems high, shop around. Comparing shops and prices also help you avoid being charged for unnecessary car repairs.
