Security and Garage Door Parts

The second generation of garage door parts increased their security by featuring openers with dip switches that could be set by the owner to a unique combination. While this did increase security, most owners would leave the default setting, which gives burglars the chance to break-in easily. Another is that a code grabber could be utilized to gain access to your system. Modern automatic openers now feature rolling-code technology, where your remote will transmit a brand new security code each time you press the remote; your garage door parts do all the work even with the simplest orders. All you have to do is take extra precautions.

Every garage door part responds to the emergency release command. Without it, you wouldn’t be able to open the door when the opener is on the fritz. But some clever crooks have turned this essential feature into a security risk. Lots of times garage door parts do not respond efficiently due to someone forgetting to close the door properly. A garage door monitor is a good reminder. Sensors are provided and automatic a door closer provides even more security, since it closes the door whether you’re home or not.

Visually inspect your door and its garage door parts each month. Look at springs, cables, rollers and pulleys for signs of wear. Do not attempt to remove, adjust or repair these parts or anything attached to them. A trained door repairman must make adjustments to these parts, which are under high tension. As explained earlier, testing whether the garage door parts respond to the opener’s reversing mechanism at least every month. Never leave the garage door partially open. When activated again, it may travel downward and come in contact with an object in its path. This also impacts your home’s security as well.

Lastly, a new trend in home invasion is gaining access to the home by stealing the opener or car. Never leave the remote control in the car or with a parking attendant. Consider using a key chain remote and always lock the entry to the inside of your home especially if your opener is programmed to your vehicle.
