Stress-free Packing, Storage, and Moving

If you find yourself needing the services of a storage facility, then you will want to know the best way to pack your belongings. Storage and moving, depending on how long you plan to leave your items in the storage unit, and whether the units are air conditioned, will affect how you pack your items. You should also be aware of rodents and insects that could thrive on your items. Finally, you want to pack your things so that they are easily removed and so damage does not occur inside the boxes while in storage.

Your first step should be to take an inventory of everything you need to store. It doesn’t need to be written down but you’ll need to think through all the items that you plan on putting into the storage. Group all your frequently-used items together. You will want to pack these items last and keep them together in the front of the storage unit. Packing, storage and moving means protecting your valuables from any trauma by the use of bubble wraps, newsprint and others designed for your specific items.

Mattress covers work well too. Correct box size is important. Large boxes should be used for light items and small boxes used for your heavier items like books and documents. Label every box obvious it may seem. Keep in mind the weight of the box. Packaged boxes should not weigh more than you can lift.

Heavier items should always be placed at the bottom. Securely seal each box. Use packaging tape and keep the tops of the boxes flat for easier stacking. Wardrobe boxes allow you to quickly package up your clothes that are on hangers. They also help keep your clothes from getting wrinkled.

Any appliances require servicing, disconnecting and preparation. You may be able to perform most of the requirements yourself as storage and moving of these items need extra care. Use particular caution when disconnecting gas appliances as the flexible gas line connecting most gas appliances is fragile.
For personal items, it is recommended for you to personally transport irreplaceable photos, financial papers and assets, legal documents, jewelry and other collections.
