Pregnancy massage is beneficial throughout the entire
nine months of pregnancy; however, if you are having a high risk pregnancy it
is best to discuss your condition with your midwife or physician before seeking
a therapist. It is best to seek a therapist who is certified in pregnancy
massage because it is important to know and understand what is and is not safe
for the mother and her baby as well as having knowledge of pregnancy and the
anatomy of a pregnant woman.
It is interesting that while labor is an
anxiety-provoking experience, and while pregnancy massage has been noted o
reduce anxiety in many ways, the focus of pregnancy massage has been almost
exclusively on the alleviation of pain; pregnancy massage was noted to lessen
the pain intensity during phase 1 and 2 dilatation. It has been found that depressed
women have a greater incidence of prematurity and low birth weight rates. Thus,
pregnancy massage has been effective. Surprisingly, postpartum depression and
cortisol levels decreased in women who experienced pregnancy massage.
A typical pregnancy massage session takes at least an
hour and can go on up to 90 minutes. The mother will be supported with pillows
as she lies on her side. She will be draped with a sheet and only the body part
that is being worked will be exposed. Most massage therapists like to keep the
room quiet and at a comfortable temperature for the mother, sometimes playing
quiet music in the background. It is best to avoid eating a large meal before
the massage or drinking large amount of liquids.
There are a few situations in which pregnancy massage
can be risky. For instance, you’ll need to avoid massage in an area where you
have a blood clot or a bone fracture. You’d also want to avoid massage on an
area where you have a skin injury or condition that could be aggravated by
rubbing, including burns, open wounds, skin infections, or eczema. Another is
to steer clear of hot tubs, saunas, and treatments such as hot wraps. These can
make you overheat which can cause problems for you and the baby.
Be aware that it is required for you to have
clearance from your doctor or midwife before the treatment.
