Transmission Valve Body Problems You Might Deal With

How important is it that you have a transmission valve body that is in good condition? First, you need to know what valve bodies are to be able to answer this question.

So what are valve bodies? These are hydraulic control centers in cars that receive pressurized fluid from the main pump. Valve bodies are extremely important when it comes to the transmission of a car, particular an automatic transmission car. They valve body detects the fluid pressure and then releases a hydraulic signal to control gear shifting and use of the clutch.

In simpler terms, the valve body is responsible for the proper shifting of gears in a car. And if it’s damaged, you can expect your gears to shift at incorrect times or, possibly, your gears won’t even shift at all. As you should know, valve bodies are made of springs and valves. This means that these parts should work properly. One faulty part will affect the performance of the other part. If the springs are damaged, the valves won’t open and shut.

Now, do you know how important valve bodies are?  Given that you do, you will need a repair technician to always check the valve body of your car. The repair technician will use a diagnostics tool to check the damaged components. If there is a damaged part, the repair guy will know what to do. So, what are the possible problems you might face?

First, metal debris can block the fluid passages. If this happens, a car’s shifting will be affected since there is no proper pressure maintained. The O-rings can fail due to metal debris, which will result to a fluid leak in the transmission. The metal debris should be taken out in order for the valves to work correctly. Incorrect amount of pressure leads to shifting problems like delayed shifts.

Second, improper lubrication can cause problems in valve bodies. When there is a lack of lubrication, there will be metal to metal contact, which results tin wearing of the parts and then leads to gear shifting problems. The lack of lubrication can also cause metal debris and overheating of your car.

Last, failing to change your transmission fluid can cause problems too. When your transmission continues to use worn fluid, protection is decreased due to the lubricant losing viscosity. It is necessary to change your transmission fluid every 15,000 km. or more often, if needed.

If you are having problems with transmission valve bodies, get it checked first and see if it can’t be repaired. If it’s no longer repairable, consult a valve body builder and have yours replaced.
