Spinal Decompression Therapy

Spinal decompression therapy is an advanced form of spinal traction. It is a non-surgical, non-chiropractic therapy to relieve back pain and other problems associated with spinal disc injuries. Spinal decompression devices use the same basic principle of spinal traction that has been offered by appropriately trained health professionals for many years. Both traction and decompression therapy are applied with the goals of relieving pain and promoting an optimal healing environment for bulging, degenerating, or herniated discs.

Spinal disc injury is responsible for a significant number of lumbar/leg pain and head and neck pain syndromes. Excessive compression forces from daily activities increases internal spinal disc pressure which can lead to spinal disc protrusion, herniation, and bulging. The treatment aids in the healing damaged discs and reserves dystrophic changes in nerves. Spinal decompression then, by significantly reducing pressure, it promotes retraction of the herniation of spinal disc back to a normal physiologic position and promotes the intake of fluids, oxygen, and other substances necessary for healing the spinal disc and surrounding tissues. Spinal decompression stimulates the repair of tissues and inhibits leakage of the internal material of the spinal disc.

As the more obvious benefits of spinal decompression related to disc hydration, there are some important ones too. Pressure changes within your discs help stimulate the healing process. Discs naturally have a sleepy metabolic turnover, which means they struggle to keep on top of the day to day repair and maintenance. This means that intervertebral discs particularly in your lower back, breakdown in life sooner than any other structure in the human body. Combine this with disc metabolism being smothered even more by excessive loading such as long sitting hours, tense back muscles and others.

Any non-acute low back or neck pain syndrome not related to a disease process, canal stenosis or acute strain injury can be relieved by spinal decompression. Acute inflammation of injuries should be reduced by other means before beginning spinal decompression. Contraindications are similar to manipulative therapy, however sine mechanical stretch has no impact, mild to moderate osteoporosis may not be a contraindication. Clinical findings of spinal decompression create a quick response as patients tend to feel a sense of relief. The extent and seriousness of the symptoms will determine if more sessions should be done to achieve desired effects.
