Can Chiropractic Treatment Help With A Herniated Disc?

Do you suffer from back pain, leg pain or other pain in the lower part of the body? If you do, you may have a herniated disc. It can also be called slipped disc or bulging disc.

Through the word “disc” itself, you’ll already know that it has something to do with your spine. When you have a herniated disc, this means that your disc has bulged out already.

The spinal discs are soft as it allows the vertebrae to move smoothly. The discs also serve as shock absorbers to prevent spine damage. It is made of an outer ring that can eventually dry up, causing it to tear and pushing the soft part of the disc to bulge out.

Not all cases of slipped disc are painful. The pain only occurs when the bulging disc puts pressure on the spinal nerve. In this case, an inflammatory reaction will occur causing the pain and discomfort. Apart from the pain in your back, the pain can spread to the buttocks, groin area, thighs, legs and calves. There can be a tingling sensation, numbness or weakness felt in one or both legs. Even the arms can be affected too.

The good news is that a herniated disc can be treated through chiropractic treatment. As you may know, chiropractic focuses on the spine. And for chiropractors, a bulging disc is considered a subluxation in the body. Chiropractors are trained to locate these subluxations or spinal misalignments and then correct them through chiropractic adjustments.

Do know that the adjustment itself isn’t the treatment. Chiropractic treatment is about holistic and natural healing. The main concept here is that when the subluxation has been removed, the body can now undergo the natural healing process. It is believed that subluxations prevent the body from healing itself.

It also doesn’t mean that when you have a chiropractic adjustment, your problem with herniated disc will go away forever. Unless your slipped disc is a hereditary problem, you are the one to blame. A bulging disc is a result of years and years of neglecting the health of your spine. Moreover, poor posture, poor nutrition and lack of exercise contribute to the worsening of a slipped disc.

So when you talk to a chiropractor, he or she won’t simply suggest chiropractic adjustments to be done. The chiropractor will also look into your lifestyle, diet, exercise routine and posture. He or she will help strengthen your spine and at the same time, work on your overall health and well-being—all in a natural way.
