While bringing your car to a reputable auto repair
company should give you peace of mind that your car will
be repaired properly,
it isn’t always the case. The company may have already established its name,
but the service itself will rely on the skills of the automotive mechanic.
The good news is that popular auto repair companies
only hire the best mechanics out there, qualified and certified ones. This is
to avoid tarnishing the name of the company in case an automotive mechanic does
a poor job at repairing something. However, it always pays to be sure when it
comes to your car, doesn’t it?
When you bring your car to the auto repair shop,
make it a point to talk to the automotive mechanic assigned to service your
car. The company will allow this so don’t worry about that. You must focus on
your talk with the mechanic and ask him the right questions. This is how you’ll
know if the mechanic really got what it takes to do the job right and if he is
someone to trust your car with.
One question to ask is what kind of auto repair you
will need. A greedy mechanic will give you a long list of repairs you’ll need.
Of course, you won’t need all these done right away. This is just a way the
company wants to make money—by telling you that you need repairs immediately.
Now ask the mechanic to make a priority list. If he does this willingly, that’s
a plus for him.
Next, you’d want to check the mechanic’s honesty.
If you want to trust the guy, you should feel confident that he is telling you
the truth and not just trying to make more cash. A good question to ask is if
he would recommend another repair shop or parts dealer for special repairs.
Most mechanics aren’t allowed to answer this question. However, a genuine and
honest mechanic will point you in the right direction. That is a huge plus.
You’d want to check how qualified he is as an automotive
mechanic, so you ask about his certifications. If he says that he doesn’t have
certification, this doesn’t necessarily mean that the mechanic isn’t a good
one. Truth is, there are certified mechanics who still do bad jobs and there
are mechanics without certification that do awesome jobs.
However, mechanics should make an effort to get ASE
certifications and they should be honest with whether they are getting it or
not. If they are, this shows that the mechanic is really eager to move forward
with his career. Mind you, getting the ASE certification is a tedious process,
which is why many mechanics don’t bother getting it.
Lastly, make sure to ask the mechanic on how to maintain your car and
do little fixes on your own. If the mechanic is willing to teach you the tricks
of the trade, he’s definitely a keeper.
