Three Basic Tree Care Methods for Your Mature Trees

Mature trees are old trees. Usually, these are the big trees you see that are already deeply rooted to the ground. The great thing about mature trees is that they provide a good shade and they add beauty to the outside of your home.

However, since mature trees have already age, they will require different tree care methods. Similar to aging people, there’s a different way to maintain their health. Don’t worry. These are fairly easy things that you can do to maintain the health and appearance of your trees.

Mature trees will need more care. This is because they’ve grown more sensitive to their environment. They tend to grow slower too. Now if the trees are left uncared for or neglected, they can get damaged with large pruning wounds and are at higher risk of getting a disease. Also, if the tree grows on unhealthy soil, the tree itself will become unhealthy too.

The thing is it will take a long while before an unhealthy tree starts to show symptoms, which is why it is very important that you follow a regular tree care maintenance routine for proper care.  Here are the three basic steps to care for mature trees:

1.       Water them- Watering mature trees, or any tree for that matter, should always be on top of your tree care maintenance list. Trees need to have their supply of water to remain healthy. For mature trees, they need monthly deep watering, especially if it doesn’t rain in your area. Also, be sure to use the right amount of water for your tree.

2.       Get them pruned- Mature trees need regular pruning. Pruning helps remove dead wood or diseased wood that adds weight to the branches. By regular pruning, this lessens the risk of branch breakage which can cause unexpected injuries. It is a must that you hire a professional arborist to prune your trees. Professional arborists know how to prune properly, hence, not compromising the health of your trees.

3.       Get a tree health check- Remember your Biology class? Trees are living things and you should treat them that way. They are susceptible diseases when you don’t take care of them. Get them checked by a certified arborist. This is primarily important for safety reasons. As mentioned, it will take a while before symptoms manifest, so it’s best that you go ahead and look for symptoms before the tree’s health gets worse.

The mature trees at your property are probably older than you, and if you grew up with them, the more you should do tree care maintenance. Treat them as part of your family, your home. Trees have so many benefits and it would be a shame to watch a tree wither just because of pure neglect.
