Kids and Physical Therapy: Is It Safe for Them?

Physical therapy is a treatment that helps a person with moving his body. How can a person need help moving his body you ask? Well, if a person is injured or is suffering from an illness that limits his physical movements, these instances will make the person incapable of moving his body to its full potential and this is where the therapy helps.

Physical therapists are the ones who perform this kind of therapy. They are certified and licensed health professionals, who mainly focus on the improvement of movement. They can treat anyone, from babies to seniors.

The number of physical therapy sessions will depend on the severity of the injury. Some will need to go to the therapist three times a week, some will need to go weekly. The treatment aims to strengthen the body part that was injured to help the person regain his original bodily movements.

Now with kids, it is perfectly safe to undergo this therapy. We all know how kids can easily get injured by playing, more so when your child starts to play sports. A broken leg is one of the common reasons why kids get physical therapy. At first, your child may be required to wear crutches as he or she won’t be able to move the injured leg. But after that, therapy is needed to hasten the recovery of the injury.

Nonetheless, your child will be advised to use the crutches until he or she can walk without the assistance of the crutches. Of course, the earlier they dispose of the crutches, the better. Actually, there are some physical therapists that wouldn’t ask their patient to use crutches anymore just to make them more independent. However, kids have weaker bodies so the help of crutches would be really useful.
Physical therapists will also teach their patients how to use the crutches properly. Improper use of the crutches can lead to further injury. And on top of that, the therapists also work with the patient to do a series of exercises aimed to help the injured part become stronger and mobile once again.

If your child gets injured and needs physical therapy, do make sure that the physical therapist you’ll be getting is someone who has experience working with kids. Working with little children and adults are very different as they are motivated in different ways. For kids, exercising with toys is a great help. Places that are specifically for therapy for kids would have a pediatric therapy gym to help encourage the kids to go through the sessions.

The frequency and duration of the therapy sessions will depend on your child’s injury. It can last from 30 to 60 minutes and can last up to three to six months.
