Not only can a new garage door provide safe,
secure, and easy access to your garage, but it also can renew and refresh your
property’s overall appearance, particularly if it can be seen from curbside.
Garage doors are made from steel, wood and wood composites, fiberglass, vinyl,
and aluminum. Though each of these has its benefits, steel and wood doors are
by far the most common.
Overhead Garage Doors
There are different types of overhead garage doors.
Swing-out carriage-house doors or sliding barn doors are a good choice if you
need to keep the ceiling clear or if you want their distinctive look.
Otherwise, the most popular option by far is the overhead garage door. Before
purchasing an overhead garage door, measure the space between the top of the
garage door opening and the ceiling or overhead framing. Standard tracks
require headroom of about 14 inches. If you don’t have that, you can get
low-headroom track. There are also tracks specially made for garages with
unusually high walls or cathedral ceilings.
Common Garage Door Problems
1. Uneven
movements: The easiest way to solve and unevenly opening an overhead garage
doors is by removing an obstruction or debris in the tracks where the wheels
run. Clear and clean those first to see if the problem is solved. If not, check
the quality of the springs. They should be the same length and stretch the same
amount. On doors with automatic openers, the motors that control both sides of
the door may be faulty. Professional garage door repair or replacements may be
in order.
2. Incomplete
closing: There is a method that will sometimes work for this kind of garage
door repair. The photo eye is a small plastic device with a lens and is located
about 10” from the floor on both sides of the overhead garage door. Look at
both photo eyes and see if there is a green flashing light on the device. If
there is no flashing eye, check to make sure nothing has been placed in front
of the photo eyes (this area must be kept clear), and ensure they haven’t
been mis-aligned.
Some home improvement centers sell garage doors
that are designed for do-it-yourselfers to install. If you buy a door to
install yourself, be sure that it comes with complete and easy-to-follow
instructions. It is highly advisable, however, that you leave it to the pros.
