CHIROPRACTIC TREATMENT: RELIEVING BACK PAINS

Chiropractic treatment can be an effective nonsurgical treatment option for many types of low back pain, including those associated with facet joint or sacroiliac joint dysfunction and disc problems. Chiropractic treatment is a common therapeutic treatment designed to increase function and decrease pain and nerve irritability.

What are the techniques in chiropractic treatments?
The spine is made up of a column of interlocking bones called vertebrae. Each vertebra has a circular solid body and a bony ring behind it. The spinal cord travels through the bony ring. Chiropractors apply direct pressure to the processes of one or more vertebrae using a finger or the palm of the hand. Most manipulations also involve indirect force. The practitioner carefully twists the patient’s head, shoulders and hips, temporarily displacing parts of the spine. When treating people with low back pain, chiropractors and the other health workers may also use other therapies. These include massage, heat and cold therapies, and electrotherapies. For some people, chiropractic treatment reduces the amount of medication needed to control pain.

How does chiropractic treatment benefit a patient?
Spinal manipulation and chiropractic treatment is generally considered a safe, effective treatment. Chiropractic treatment is helpful in treating back pain and headaches. In addition, osteoarthritis and fibromyalgia may respond to the moderate pressure used by practitioners. However, people who have osteoporosis, spinal cord compression, or inflammatory arthritis, or who take blood-thinning medications should not undergo chiropractic treatment. In addition, patients with a history of cancer should first obtain clearance from their medical doctor before undergoing chiropractic treatment.

How many chiropractic treatments does a patient need?
More than one session is usually needed to correct a problem. Usually chiropractic treatments last several weeks. Your chiropractor may suggest two or three short sessions a week at first. These would last only about 10 to 20 minutes each. Once you start improving, chiropractic treatments may be just once a week. You and your chiropractor will talk about how effective the treatment is based on the goals you discussed in your first session.

It is okay to shop around until you find a chiropractic treatment clinic you like and who is convenient for you to visit. Back pain management will require an ongoing relationship, so you want to make a good match.
