STORING AND MOVING: WHICH MOVING SUPPLIES?

When you move or relocate, start with a good packing list so you purchase the right packing and moving supplies. These ensure that your household goods arrive at your new destination without a scratch. Assuming you have decided which household goods will be moved, identify the items that will require specialized packing, based on fragility, awkward shapes or larger pieces that will be difficult to move.

Here are other tips to make your move so much easier:

Invest on a Stretch Wrap.
Think of this plastic wrap as moisture and scratch protection for fragile items when storing and moving. If you have large items you’d like to protect from the elements, invest in stretch wrap prior to your move. When wrapped tightly around an item, this plastic sheeting will keep dirt, water, and dust away from your furniture, bedding, and other bulky essentials. Thanks to its stickiness, it’s also great for bundling any odd-shaped items together.

Choose the right size of boxes.
Boxes are the most important moving supply. Thus, it is best to put heavy items, like books, in small boxes; light items, like linens and pillows, in bigger ones. (Large boxes packed with heavy items are a common complaint of professional movers. They not only make the job harder but also have a better chance of breaking.) The rule of thumb is that each box should not weigh more than 50 lbs. Even if you have a storing and moving company to assist, remember that you still have to move the boxes yourself, from one room to another, so make sure you're able to lift them yourself. Some boxes, such as wardrobe or electronic boxes, may naturally be heavier. Just try to keep the number of boxes over 50 pounds to a minimum.

When moving and storing items.
Follow the storing and moving companies' size suggestions — but if in doubt, go bigger (you don't want to have to make two trips). Make of list of what you intend to move — and think about what you'll put in first (see below). It's no fun to have to take things out once you've put them in, if you decide too late that they're in the wrong spot.

Lastly, it is best to consider other items that will need special treatment such as electronic items, furniture and documents when storing and moving. Double-box your TV, setting the box containing the TV into another box that you’ve padded with packing paper.
