Transmission Rebuild, Repair, or Replacement?

A lot of people believe in the saying that “new is better.” But when it comes to transmissions, it is often worth a second look at what you already have, even when trouble comes knocking. Transmissions regulate and convey power from the engine to the drivetrain, which puts them under constant stress. They are also incredibly complex, consisting of dozens of moving precision parts. This makes transmissions very susceptible to wear and tear. With this, there are options you might want to consider.

New Transmission

New transmission may seem like the best option – if you have to incur an expense in transmission repairs, why not start with something new so that it will last longer. There are actually plenty of reasons that new may not be better when it comes to your transmission. However, the “new” transmission could have undergone a transmission rebuild a number of years ago, and doesn’t have the benefit of updated parts.  Manufacturers create updated parts for all aspects of the vehicle as parts fail and show them where the weaknesses in their initial design lie.  They then create updated parts which are better than the originals.

Transmission Rebuild

In order to perform a transmission rebuild, a transmission rebuild kit is required, which provides all the replacement parts needed. There are different types of kits, which may or may not include bands, seals, steels, clutches, gaskets, O-rings, modulator, filter, bushings, and washers. It really depends on what parts are going to be replaced in the transmission. A transmission rebuild is a cost effective way to get your car back on the road with optimal results and performance, and everything old is new again for you and your rebuilt transmission.

Transmission Repair

A transmission repair consists of replacing the minimum amount of parts to make the transmission operational, rather than a transmission rebuild or replacement. When failure causes too much damage within the transmission, repair may not be an option.  However, for many transmission malfunctions, a repair is all that is needed to get many more dependable miles of service.

No matter what choice you make, a good assessment of the situation is the best option before jumping into conclusions of choosing the best repair your vehicle needs.
