Therapeutic Massage for Headaches and Migraines

Migraine headaches occur when blood vessels around the temples and base of the skull become enlarged causing a chemical release that inflames the vessels, muscles, and nerves in the head and neck. Symptoms such as pain, nausea, diarrhea, and sensitivity to light can occur and last for hours or days.

Therapeutic massage is said to help ease the pain caused by intense headaches and migraines. Evidence of this has been found in numerous ancient cultures, including those of Egypt, India, China, Japan and Arabic countries. Therapeutic massage for migraines and headaches involves a therapist pressing, stroking, rubbing, kneading and pressing on the body’s tissues and muscles. There is also some evidence that therapeutic massage for migraine sufferers may help reduce the number of attacks.

Here are some of the therapeutic massage types that can help people with migraine:

Craniosacral Therapeutic Massage. Craniosacral therapeutic massage is a gentle, hands-on approach. During a massage treatment, a therapist finds blockages preventing the flow of fluid from tight or inflamed muscles. Using gentle pressure, he releases them, allowing the fluid to regain its normal pulse from the head to the sacral region, thereby reducing migraines in both strength and frequency.

Trigger Point Massage. Some tension headaches may be relieved by a specific form of therapeutic massage called trigger point therapy. Trigger point therapy is the application of pressure to specific points such as along the muscles extending from the base of the skull to mid-back located along the spine and muscles on either side of the neck. This pressure interrupts the nerve signals that not only cause the headache pain but also create the trigger point. This therapeutic massage aims to relieve pain and to re-educate the muscles so they assume healthy positions and postures that do not generate pain.

Reflexology. Reflexology uses a "map" of points on the hands, feet, and even the ears that correlate to different areas of the body. Reflexologists most commonly work on the feet, feeling for knots or granules. They then apply pressure on these points to release toxins that have built up due to lactic acid, stress or disease. This therapeutic massage can both relieve migraine symptoms and provide relaxation.

Before trying any of these massage treatments, make sure to visit your physician to avoid further damages especially when you are handling chronic medical conditions.
