PUBLIC STORAGE: MAXIMIZE YOUR STORAGE UNIT

No matter what you are storing or where you are storing it, maximizing your self-storage space is important. It may be tempting after a long day of moving to unload your boxes as quickly as possible into your storage unit, dump them on the ground in no particular order, and leave. But by organizing your items now, you'll be able to quickly find what you need later, without lifting, moving and rummaging through multiple boxes.

Plan ahead of time. Taking the time to assess how items are in your storage unit is often ignored in favor of making decisions on the fly. Just like organization in any avenue of life, order creates peace of mind. Therefore, plotting out where boxes go or should be stored is important, especially if you’re using a moving company, which often performs their task in the quickest and most convenient way for them. That may lead to unexpected space constraints, which could end up hitting your wallet.

Learn about public storage features. If you’ve determined what you need to store and the type of storage unit that you need. Before you choose an individual unit, you'll need to think about the features offered by a given facility. Looking at consumer reviews of public storage facilities is a great way to understand if a given storage space offers a high level of service and convenience. Remember that not all consumer reviews will be entirely truthful. Instead of letting one poor review scare you away, look at what consumers are saying as a whole.

Store items wisely. When placing items into the storage unit, Look at which items can be stacked and clearly mark which items are fragile and cannot have boxes loaded on top of them. Items that can be stacked on the bottom should be loaded last into your moving truck so that they are unloaded first. Other items should be clearly labeled on the boxes, on more than one side. If you are using plastic bins, you can use white contact paper and a permanent marker to label your items. The contact paper will stick to the plastic bin but can be easily removed if you decide to reuse that bin for different items later on.
