INEXPENSIVE FURNITURE: CHOOSING THE PERFECT MATTRESS

You should think about buying a new mattress if you wake up tired or achy, you tend to sleep better at hotels than at home, your mattress looks saggy or lumpy, you're over 40, or your mattress is at least five to seven years old. Get to know how to pick the best mattress for your bed size.
What to do first?

The first decision you have to make has to do with a mattress's core, which provides the support. When testing mattresses, make sure the base in the shop is similar to the one you have at home. If you have fixed slats or a hard surface, a soft mattress will feel very different on top of that than the ensemble base it's resting on in the shop.

Know Your Size: As well as confusion sometimes arising between the varying bed sizes and corresponding mattresses, the classification of both king size bed and queen size beds also leads to some difficulties. Firstly, some people simply classify king and queen size beds as the same thing. Sometimes a queen is misinterpreted to be a super king size bed. More often it is thought to be at least bigger than a standard double. Different definitions from abroad also sometimes leak their way into public consciousness, especially when potential buyers look to the internet to do research.

What Mattress to Choose: Don't rely on descriptors. One company's ultra-plush might be another's super soft. Orthopedists once recommended sleeping on an extremely firm queen size mattress of king size mattress, but there's little evidence to support that view. It is recommended that you do a lot of comparing. If you like a king size mattress at one store and ask elsewhere for something similar, you're likely to be steered toward a same-brand mattress that's supposed to have the same construction, components, and firmness. It's unlikely. Mattress makers offer some lines nationally, but when those brands are sold through major chains. And manufacturers don't publish a directory of comparables. Retailers that claim to sell them, insiders say, generally snoop in competing stores and compile a list of beds that appear equivalent. But when we went to three bedding chains and asked for king and queen size mattresses similar to those we'd bought at three department stores, five of the six mattresses were way off the mark.
