KEEPING THEM CALM DURING KIDS’ HAIRCUT

Taking your toddles to the barber does not have to be shear torture- although it seems that way to several moms who have kids who scream bloody murder every time they do their kids’ haircuts. Here are some tips on how you can make your trip to the hair salon a pleasing experience for everybody.

Make an appointment. Organize your appointment time in the morning or after a nap. Most young children tend to be at their best when they are well rested and not hungry.

Remain calm. Many parents are anxious for their kids’ haircuts, the kids pick up on the parent’s feelings and tend to amplify them. Breathe in, breathe out, and do not show your anxiety to your kids!

Explain what will happen. Youngsters don’t actually understand what happens during a kid’s haircut. It is best to tell them the sequence of what’s going to happen for them to prepare himself for the next procedure. For instance, get him play with a comb and let him brush his own hair to get comfortable with things touching his hair. You can also pretend that your hands are a pair of scissors so that your child knows what to expect when he sits in the “special chair.”

Make them feel good about themselves. You should never be made to feel embarrassed by your kids’ behavior at the salon. Kid’s haircut is a very confronting experience for many and most will grow out of it if treated with compassion by the stylist. Praise, encourage, and distract your child during a kids’ haircut.

Create distractions. It is good to give them distractions as you alleviate the fear factor by offering cartoons or toys during the kid’s haircut.

Pick a good stylist. Ensure your stylist is experienced and qualified in doing kids’ haircuts. Completing a successful haircut on a wriggling, squiggling child is a challenge and not a task for an apprentice or someone inexperienced this can be checked when making your appointment.

It’s best to find a salon that you and your child like, especially the atmosphere. Is it for kids? Is it friendly? Is it fun? Go and try different hair salons there until you find the one you like the best for your kids.
