AVOIDING KITCHEN CABINET DESIGN MISTAKES

Kitchens are really the soul of the house and are for more than just cooking but also for congregating, so they need to be put in the context of the home's public spaces or the adjacent spaces. In a lot of older houses, the kitchen tends to be isolated and often small. Today, people want a kitchen that incorporates both a workspace and a casual space for dining or even working. Thus, kitchen cabinet designs play a huge role in home remodeling.

Always match material options and construction. For traditional kitchen cabinet designs, solid hardwood has traditionally been the choice material for drawer box fronts and sides. Solid wood joinery includes dovetail, finger, tongue-and-groove, dowel, biscuit and dado joints. Avoid flimsy drawers made from thin particleboard with a laminate or wood veneer and any drawers with stapled construction. While solid wood is premium for drawer front and sides, plywood is a better choice for the bottom section of a drawer because it won't shrink or swell.

Do research ahead of time. When choosing or changing kitchen cabinet designs, put function first.  Whether you plan for a tiny spaced or wide interior, the most important thing is to make sure that you are free to move to and fro without struggle.

Consider finishes. Choose a timeless paint or finish and consider its impact as part of the whole design. Over time, you’ll likely tire of anything too bold or distracting. Have a sample door finished first to compare against other design elements. Live with it for a few days before finalizing your decisions.

Lighting can help a lot. Unlike in other rooms of the house, overhead lighting is insufficient in kitchens, in the kitchen, you don't want the light behind you, casting a shadow on the workspace. You need it positioned to fall in front of you. Choosing under-cabinet lights is smart because they shine directly on countertops.

Last but not the least… Kitchen cabinet designs that come with pull-through slides are ideal for islands because they allow drawers to be opened from either side. Some specialty slides allow drawers to extend beyond a full extension. These slides are advantageous for countertops with deep overhangs.
