IS IT TIME TO TRIM YOUR PALM TREES?

It is normal to see palm trees line the streets in Florida. This is true even in residential properties. The tropical feel that palm trees give to the surroundings is good addition to the landscape of one’s home. However, if they are not maintained properly, they can grow hairy making a property look dirty and unkempt.

Regular maintenance in the form of palm tree trimming is essential if you have palm trees in your lawn or yard. Just like hair, if left untrimmed for a long time, it will not look pleasant. But palm tree trimming isn’t just about the appearance. Other reasons for trimming palm trees include…

1.       …getting more out of the asking price if you’re selling the home. Palm tree trimming will maintain the appearance of your palm trees so they can grow beautifully. If you’re selling the house, you’d want the buyers, inspectors and appraisers to give it a high value. Buyers might ask a lower price if your trees are unkempt.

2.       …getting rid of rats’ nests. Dead palm fronds attract rats. They climb into these things and build their nests, making your palm trees their home. It can really be disgusting to think that a rat family is living in your palm trees and breeding there, too. Don’t invite them. Trim your palm trees regularly!

3.        …getting rid of potential fire hazards. Big stacks of palm fronds in your backyard are great hazards. All it takes is one lightning to strike that stack and you’ll have a big fire to deal with.

4.       …securing one’s home. Untrimmed palm trees can cause accidents in your home and your neighbor’s home, too. You see, when a palm tree grows taller, the palm fronds grow bigger. When they grow bigger, they get heavier too. So if there’s heavy wind in your area, it can carry the dead palm fronds and damage windows and other things in your property and your neighbors.

Untrimmed palm trees may give you the creeps. But there is more to this when trimming your palm trees. Palm tree trimming isn’t just a service to your home, it is a service to the safety of your community.
