RECLINING SOFA: MOVING TO YOUR COMFORT

You're thinking about getting a new sofa, but you want something more than just a place to watch TV, something a little different.  Reclining sofas are versatile in both use and style, but the addition of moving mechanisms makes finding the perfect piece more complicated than buying a basic couch. Look for furniture that comes with a lifetime warranty on the reclining mechanism and a minimum of three years on the entire sofa.

The Different Types of Reclining Sofas

Traditional Reclining Sofas. This reclining sofa functions by reclining when a lever or button is pushed that releases the seatback into the down position and the footrest into the up position. This type of reclining sofa is better suited for bigger rooms, as about 3 feet of space is needed behind it to allow the seatback to fully recline.

Wall-Hugger Reclining Sofas. Wall-hugger reclining sofas are usually the option available in addition to rocker recliners. The difference is that wall-hugger reclining sofas sit up straighter and therefore can be pressed directly up against a wall - using far less space. They also often have a more limited range of motion, and a resting position that is easier to get in and out of.

Lift Reclining Sofa. Lift reclining sofas are popular with the elderly and those who have difficulty getting out of a deeper recliner. The lift mechanism pushes the chair from a flat seated position to a more upright angled position that guides the occupant into the standing position.

Guidelines when Choosing a Reclining Sofa

Think about size. freestanding sofa may be fine, but one up against a wall or another piece of furniture needs additional clearance in back to allow for the reclining sofa -- and in front to allow for the foot rest that comes up and out. Be sure the sofa can fit through doorways.

Features make a difference. Reclining sofas typically include other options, such as a fold-down, center console with cup holders or even different types of reclining mechanisms. Other features may include treated fabric for stain resistance or even the type of trim on the sofa itself.

Be bold. Never be afraid to mix and match your furniture to blend with your current living room decor, or fill the entire space.
