Common Garage Door Tests

Garage door maintenance is not on most people’s regular to do list. There’s nothing worse than getting into your vehicle, checking everything, latching the seat belt, starting the car, then pressing the controls for the garage door opener and nothing happens. Garage doors must be maintained just as everything else. There are certain requirements necessary to guarantee that your doors work properly.

·         Visual inspection. Stand inside the garage with the garage door closed. Look over the garage door hinges, springs, cables and rollers. Watch out for signs of wear or damage. Look for cable wear or fraying. Inspect whether the mounting hardware is loose or if something is not quite right because it may be a symptom of a more serious issue. Have the garage door system inspected by a trained service technician.

·         Balance test. If your door is equipped with an automatic opener system, close the door and disconnect the automatic opener. Once you are able to lift the door manually (if the door doesn’t open fully), there might have been something wrong with the balance and the synchronization of the garage door hinges, pulleys and rollers.

·         Reversing mechanism. With the door fully open, lay a piece of wood such as a section on the floor in the center of the garage door opening where the door would touch the floor. Push your garage door opener’s transmitter or wall button to close the door. When the door strikes the wood, the door should automatically reverse. If it doesn’t, there may be problems with the garage door hinges, rollers, opener, and sensors.

·         Force setting. With the door fully open, push your garage door opener’s transmitter or wall button to close the door. As the door is closing, hold up the bottom of the door with your hands outstretched and stiff. If the door does not easily reverse and continues to close, pull your hands away immediately and call a garage door repairman.

These tests are simple yet dangerous, make sure to put on protective gears and be extra cautious on the job.
