Tiles Installation for Kitchen Remodeling

imagesTiles are versatile and durable flooring material. They are widely used everywhere but are especially useful in bathroom and kitchens. Most kitchen remodeling professionals recommend tile installation when remodeling involves renovating floors.

The steps when installing tiles include:

  1. Prepare the floor for the tile installation. Make it coarse or rough as tiles better adhere to coarse and rough surfaces.
  2. Apply tile mastic or thinset mortar on the floor. Use a V-notched or "tiling trowel" to effectively spread some of the mortar onto the floor. Hold the notched trowel at a shallow angle against the wall, so that the notches on one of its long sides dig grooves into the mortar. Use long and sweeping motions to apply the mastic or mortar.
  3. Proceed with the tile installation by laying down the tiles. Make sure that the tiles are laid down straight, by pushing it firmly into the thinset mortar to set it. Keep doing this until you reach the edge of the area where there is mortar. Apply mortar and lay down tiles once again.
  4. Cut any tiles that need to be trimmed to fit your pattern. The final row of tiles in either direction will likely need to be cut to size. Hold the full tile up to the area where it needs to be installed, and mark where it needs to be cut by using a pencil. After that, use a snap tile cutter to cut straight lines in tiles. The cutter may also be used whenever appropriate (e.g. To adjust the shape of the tiles).
  5. Put grout between tiles. Use unsanded grout for joints narrower than 1/8 inch (3 mm), and sanded grout for joints wider than this.
  6. Use a rubber grout float to scoop a small amount of grout out of the bucket. Run the float across the surface of the tile, pressing firmly to work it fully into each joint. Running the float diagonally with respect to the joints provides the best results.

After everything has been set and laid down, clean the ceramic tiles. Remove excess grout from the surface of your floors.  Rub the tiles gently with a sponge and water.

Once you are done with the cleanup, relax and enjoy the output of your kitchen remodeling project.
