Data Back-Up and Data Recovery Basics

If there is one thing that companies value the most aside from people, it is their data. Losing all or any part of that data is a borderline disaster. This is why data back-up and data recovery are regarded as SOP when handling sensitive company information.

Data Back-Up: A Requisite To Successful Data Recovery

When data is lost, the most sensible thing to do to recover the data and recover it quickly. But how will data recovery be successful if no back-up is available? It is therefore important for individuals and businesses to understand the importance of backing up their data. With proper data back-up plans, individuals and businesses can rest assured that even if catastrophe strikes, they are well prepared for data recovery.

Preparing for a disaster encompasses many things, but backing up important information is the core process that all companies must engage in to protect their valuable data. Once they have backed up the data,  it will be easy to recover the it.

Data Back-up and Recovery Plans

It is critically important that data backup and recovery solutions are simple to implement so even the most novice computer user feels comfortable in retrieving data from backups if and when needed. There are two ways on how data back-up can be done.

a. Manual Data Back-up

Manual data back-up means that every time you want to back up your data, you need to (1) manually perform the task or (2) set up schedules for your computer to perform the backups periodically. These two are not ideal because they require human intervention to be performed correctly and consistently. Implementing data backup plans that require little to no human intervention is therefore an advantage as it does not depend on anyone before it can successfully proceed with the action.

b. Automated Data Back-up

This type of operation occurs in an automated and continuous manner. This is the simplest and safest way to back-up data. Also known as Continuous Data Protection (CDP) or Continuous Data Backup (CDB), this method is similar to how anti-virus software works today. Automated data back-up runs in the background without if not with little human intervention. Perhaps the biggest advantage of this data back-up method is that as long as your hard drive is connected to your computer, the data will be backed up in real time whenever it is modified.  In simple terms, any changes effected on the data are saved.
