Kitchen Remodelling Projects: Granite or Marble Kitchen Countertops?

Kitchen remodelling projects are done to improve the busiest and most visited part of the house. Kitchen remodelling can involve the whole kitchen area from ceilings to floor, or just parts of the room like cabinets, floors, and furniture.

These days, however, most kitchen remodelling projects focus on replacing old kitchen countertops. Two of the most popular materials used for modern kitchen countertops are granite and marble. Which one should you choose?

The Similarities

Granite and Marble are both natural stones which make both of them hard and heavy and at the same time expensive and time consuming to install. There are variations in their color and pattern because they are made by Mother Earth making it hard to control or duplicate the process. Sometimes what you see in the display is not very close to what you actually get delivered. Still, granite and marble come in a wide range of colors and patterns.

Both stones are naturally resistant to wear and stain. Granite and marble kitchen countertops are relatively heatproof and they won't scorch. However, they can be stained by oily or highly colored foods so both require resealing every once in a while.

 The Differences

Kitchen remodelling contractors attest that granite kitchen countertops are much harder than marble because granite is a harder stone than marble. Granite resists impacts and scratches, as well as acids like tomato juice, lemon juice or vinegar. In addition, granite typically has a complex mottled pattern that hides stains better.

Marble, on the other hand, is simply calcium carbonate. It cracks and scratches more easily, and acids can etch it permanently. Marble kitchen countertops have very little pattern - some are even totally pure white – which makes stains and marring stand out.

Recommendations

Kitchen remodelling professionals recommend granite for hard use. On the other hand, they recommend marble for aesthetic purposes since marble looks finer than granite. At the end of the day, however, the final decision will be yours. Will you opt to have coarse but hard granite? Or a fine but not so hard marble? Take your time to make the decision. Don’t forget to take into consideration how you plan to use the kitchen countertop and all will be well.
