Foils vs. Caps: The Real Deal with Highlights

images

Highlighting is a very delicate process. A single mistake can ruin your hair. And who would want their crowning glory to be ruined for the rest of their life?

There are two ways of highlight application that you can choose from: foils and caps. Below is a brief comparison of the two methods.

Caps

Perhaps the biggest advantage that cap highlights have over foils is its cheap price. It also takes less time because it is just the process of placing the cap on the head and then pulling the hair through. However, one of the drawbacks of this method is its lack of attention to details. When the hair is pulled through little holes in the cap with a small hook, there is no way of telling which section of the hair the stylist is pulling out. This can result in a spotty look. In addition, caps can only use one color at a time because all the highlights are piled on top of each other.

Another word of caution about the cap highlights: it is not for people with sensitive scalps. This method involves a lot of pulling and tugging from beginning to end which may cause painful sensation to those with sensitive scalps.

Foils

Foils are normally more expensive than caps. And they have all the right to be.  Foil highlights require extreme technique because it is all free hand. Each highlight is precise; hair is sectioned out, the color is applied, before each section is covered with foil. This tedious process makes foils produce consistent results compared with the spotty ones delivered using the cap method. Unlike caps, foils can use different colors in the hair because each foil is isolated. Foil highlights are also not painful because the hair is free flowing and carefully selected. People with sensitive scalps may opt to choose this method of highlight application.

Because of its precision in applying highlights, the foil method can be time consuming. If you want to schedule foil highlights with your stylist, make sure you have blocked the day off.

Salon or Home

Both methods can be done at home or at the salon. It is always better to have it done at the salon under the supervision of a trained professional. But if you are determined to do it on your own, just remember that you have to be attentive and extremely careful to be sure that it turns out okay.

Questions Asked in Hair Color Maintenance

Ladies and gents now are very conscious about how they look and how to maintain the young and creative vibes in them. Getting a hair color is a great start for such new look; right after such treatment, you are responsible of all the conditioning, retouching and the rebuilding of your hair’s body. 1)       How could you soften an overdone hair color?
  • The foils used aid in keeping the hair color intact and giving a radiant glow in hair color. If the hair color seems too bright and stiff, immediately wash with anti-dandruff shampoo and apply a nourishing mask or cream to keep the strands soft.
2)       Why are there still gray hair showing up?
  • Hair color does not have that kind of effect in solid types of strands. Gray hair does not absorb the hair color; it is advisable for you to cover up your gray hair first, then if the results are not what you desire, then create two shades and add on highlights of the nearest hair color.
3)       How do hair color and perm agree with each other?
  • Hair color appears lighter with perm; the only thing is that hair color can be damaged when abused by perming. Give your hair a two-week rest before getting those foils running down your strands.
4)       When do you start rinsing off your hair?
  • Most people really feel uneasy with unwashed hair. They tend to wash off treated hair as soon as the day after the treatment so it is a waste of time and money. Hair color should be settled in for at least 48 hours after application to keep the results intact.
5)       What products should you use after a hair color treatment?
  • Hair color is a tough agent so keeping your hair soft and silky for long is the challenge. Moisturize! This is the number one solution to all your problems.

·         Home versus Salon Hair color and Highlights- over-the-counter hair coloring kits are available in the market for those who are comfortable in doing make overs themselves. Don’t experiment if you’ve never done it successfully. There is a real science to mixing colors and dyes to get a certain shade and you might end up with purple hair if you’re too impulsive. A strand test or a head allergy test should be the first step before applying hair color or highlights. There will be lesser problems with salon treated hair since salons are equipped with the right tools in applying hair color and highlights such as foils, irons, blow dryers, heaters, etc.

·         Use a single lighter shade to maintain your natural look. Highlights are only accents to your hair in order to bring out curls or layers as well as emphasize certain features of your face. The most common tool in highlights is the foil. Foils keep the chemicals in and intact with the hair for best results. However, when the hair is exposed to the chemical for a long period, the hair strands becomes dry and frizzy; so it is best to maintain the natural shade of your hair.

·         Multi-shading- applying two or more shades is a good idea when you are up to special event. There are temporary hair color products that can be washed off after use. These preparations can be multi-purpose as they are used as highlights too. But if you want permanent hair color and highlights, let your favorite salon take care of it to ensure safe and accurate results.
