People in Florida are lucky not to experience dreaded
winters like those in other states. Those who own motorcycles can attest to the
challenge of storing their bikes during this chilly winter. While we cannot
control the harshness of this season, you can take extra measures to care for
your bike.
Tips when Storing
Motorcycle
During summer, you can easily park your motorcycle outside
your home but this is no longer an option if it’s winter time. And if you can’t
fit your motorcycle in your garage, what can you do?
1.
If you want your motorcycle to be in great
condition after the winter, you must look for a motorcycle storage unit with
climate control. Make sure that the inside of the storage unit will not be
affected by the temperature outside as this can cause problems to your
motorcycle.
2.
The motorcycle storage unit should have a stable
temperature and it should be dry. Never pick a storage unit with unstable
temperature. It can break your leather seats, fuel lines and rubber gaskets.
3.
If you already found some motorcycle storage
units, the next thing to do is to prepare your fuel tank and gas line. During
the winter, your fuel lines can become clogged. You must take your motorcycle
to a repair shop and get a gas treatment solution before putting it inside the
storage unit. But before doing that, make sure your gas tank is close to empty.
4.
After taking care of the fuel tank, you must
take care of the battery. A motorcycle’s battery will eventually go flat after
two weeks of not using the bike. Replacing batteries are not cheap so what you
can do is visit the storage unit at least once a week to keep the battery
charged or recharge it. If you can, invest in a battery maintenance charger if
you are going out of town for weeks. Not only will this device charge the
battery but it will prevent overcharging as well. Why is overcharging bad?
Because the battery cells are damaged which leads to the cells not being able
to hold a charge anymore.
Protect your motorcycle the best way possible. Find a
storage unit near you.
