People go to massage clinics and spas to relax. Massage
therapy in its various forms and techniques improves blood circulation and
muscular flexibility, relieves muscle tension and pain, and helps in excreting
wastes from our body. And because it is relaxing, it should not hurt the body.
There are times when there might be a mild ache or sore
feeling during or after a massage session because deeper pressure is applied
over muscle knots or pressure points. However, a high degree of pain during or
after a massage treatment is a different matter. You should inform your massage
therapist at once when the pain you are feeling becomes unbearable. Pain may be
caused by inappropriate type of massage or improper massage techniques.
This is why it is important to choose licensed massage
therapists only. Massage therapists can either make or break us --- literally. Improper
massage therapy brings adverse effects to the body. Some of the dangers include
skin bruising, swelling, muscle and bone fractures, nerve damage, and even
organ damage.
If you are planning to go to a massage therapy clinic on a
regular basis, it is advisable that you know the basic techniques that massage
therapists normally employ. Some of the techniques that they use include circling,
stroking, friction rub, kneading, pummeling, raking, pressing, thumbing,
knuckling, and stretching. By combining these techniques, a professional
massage therapist can come up with over forty types of massage therapy
including Swedish Massage, Deep Tissue Massage, Sports Massage, Pregnancy
Massage, Geriatric Massage, and Crania-Sacral Therapy among many others. Always
remember though that no matter what technique they use, massage therapists
should never put heavy downward pressure on bony areas such as spine, ribs,
shoulders, elbows, knees, kidneys, and abdomen; and that your back should be
flat as the massage therapist bend forward, shoulders should not be hunched,
and spine and neck should be lengthened.
Remember that massage therapists cannot tell how you feel.
Only you can do that. Inform your massage therapist immediately if you feel
that something is not right. Otherwise, your massage therapist will just assume
that nothing is wrong and carry on with the treatment.
