Knowing Foot and Ankle Pain

One of the common areas where pain occurs is the middle of the top of the foot, generally a bit to the outside of the foot. This area is where tendons that go to the toes can be inflamed. This is called extensor tendonitis. Foot and ankle pain are usually caused by excessive tightness of the muscles. Arthritis is also one of the inflammatory disorders that cause foot and ankle pain. This can result to loss of joint function and deformities. Let’s discuss these problems further.

Swelling of the feet and ankles is a common problem especially during the older ages. The abnormal buildup of fluid in the ankles and feet is called edema. In some instances, the whole extremity is affected by such accumulation. Weight gain, leg infections and blood clots are the common problems you face when with edema. Foot and ankle pain is common with this situation because of the limited weight your feet and ankles can only carry.

Arthritis is also a common reason for foot and ankle pain. The joint damage associated with osteoarthritis causes swelling, pain, and deformity. The progressive deterioration occurs and the smooth “cushioning” cartilage in joints is gradually lost. As a result, the bones rub and wear against each other. Soft tissues in the joints also may begin to wear down which further causes foot and ankle pain.

Another foot and ankle pain concern is the area just below the ankle joint on the outside portion of the top of the foot. This area is called Extensor Digatorum Brevis. Underneath this muscle, there is a small canal between two bones called Sinus Tarsi. When the three small ligaments in this area are inflamed, it means there is a flattening of the foot, which pinches these ligaments. In some instances, there is actual jamming of two bones causing foot and ankle pain.

Home remedies such as lying with your legs up and stretching before any activity will surely help you get through the pain. Avoiding tight clothing or garter around thighs also helps. If your symptoms persist, professional advice is recommended. Visit a podiatrist in Tampa today to have your foot and ankle checked.
