GETTING THE MOST OUT OF YOUR STORAGE UNIT

Finding a trustworthy storage unit is kind of like finding a trustworthy landlord, except you only really get to deal with the storage company once or twice when you sign up and move in. You pay your rent, visit your storage unit when you need to get something or put something in, and that's all there is to it. However, there are some warning signs you should keep an eye out for to make sure your relationship with your storage company is a good one.

Know Your Storage Unit Needs
Many people get the smallest possible unit they can get in order to save money, and then wind up having to empty half of it to get to a box that's in the back. Don't be that guy, unless you know you'll never need anything you're putting inside. Since you said you wanted a managed storage unit, we're going to focus on how you can find storage buildings as opposed to at-home storage boxes sealed boxes.

Know Your Security Needs
Your lock protects your individual storage unit, but you also want to consider the security of the storage facility. You may choose an outdoor storage unit if you want more flexible access for loading and unloading, but this does not mean you sacrifice security. All rental facilities should have adequate perimeter protection. Most outdoor self-storage facilities have fencing, while brick walls may protect both outdoor and indoor storage units.

Make a Plan
Depending on how long you plan to store items, it may be important to provide space for ventilation and access. When storing belongings for short periods of time, it is usually okay to pack them closer together. When storing belongings for longer periods of time, however, providing extra space for ventilation and easy access is important. For belongings that you may need to access regularly, consider leaving enough space in your storage unit for an aisle. Then, be sure to arrange those belongings along the aisle for easy access.

Know Your Storage Unit Cost
Understand how and when your storage unit rental facility can terminate your contract. Non-payment or late payment is one of the many reasons a rental company can evict you, and it is important to know how your possessions will be handled in the unlikely event you are evicted.
