When it comes to accidents, the worse thing about
it is that you don’t know when it will happen. You don’t step out of your home
ready for an accident. However, you can always be prepared for when it happens.
And there’s one thing you should always keep in mind—never leave the scene of
an accident.
True enough, car accidents are very stressful.
Because of this, a lot of drivers are overcome with
fear which pushes them to just flee the scene. It can be a common impulsive
decision, but the consequences of leaving the scene of accident can be bigger
than you expect.
It is truly tempting to be leaving the scene of
accident, but doing so has great risks and punishments. These punishments vary
from one state to another. In some, hit-and-run is only a misdemeanor, but in
other states, the driver can serve one year jail time for fleeing the scene.
Other common punishments include fines and a 15-day jail sentence. Nevertheless,
both examples are only applicable to property damage.
That doesn’t sound too bad, does it? But it’s a
totally different story when someone gets injured in a car accident. Leaving
the scene of accident is punishable for up to seven years in prison. And when
this happens, the driver will definitely need to hire a traffic lawyer to help
bring down the punishment in court.
The thing is, when someone gets injured or dies in
a car accident and the other driver just flees from the scene, no jury will
look at it the driver’s way. A traffic lawyer will have to represent the driver
in court. The driver at fault won’t be able to defend himself because the act
of fleeing already shows guilt. Hence, the only way to get the charges reduced
is to seek the help of an experienced traffic lawyer.
As we talked about earlier, you won’t start your
day knowing that you’ll be part of a car accident later on. Nonetheless, it is
always helpful to be prepared for when an accident will happen. Now that you
know the possible punishments you’ll face when leaving the scene of accident,
you’ll know better. Whether it is your fault or not, just don’t leave and
always keep a number of a traffic lawyer with you at all times.
