Drivers get so nervous whenever
the “check engine” light illuminates on their dashboards. It can signal just
anything from the least costing problem to the most expensive one. However, it
is an advantage for you to have those lights because it can help prevent auto
repairs and extend your car’s life. If you think that auto maintenance is a
hassle, then think of the money you would be spending for auto repairs.
Oil Changes
Most drivers know their vehicle’s
oil needs to be changed regularly, and most of them are choosing to leave it to
the pros. Oil changes are relatively simple and are considered to be common auto
repair problems. Auto shops often take this opportunity to “upsell” customers
on additional services, such as coolant, filter change-outs, etc. In order to
avoid such situations, getting to know your mechanic is most important.
Oxygen Sensors
Another common auto repair issue
are faulty oxygen sensors. The sensor measures the amount of unburned oxygen in
the exhaust and tells the car’s computer how much fuel is in the tank. If a
faulty one is not repaired, the car’s gas mileage could drop, since the sensor
is sending incorrect information.
Air Flow Sensors
A malfunctioning mass air flow
sensor is also a common complaint in auto repair shops. This sensor determines
how much fuel should be delivered. When it malfunctions, it can result in a
loss of power to the car, surges during acceleration and a decrease in fuel
economy.
Emissions System Control
The evaporative emissions system
control is designed to trap gas tank fumes. Should the system develop a leak as
a result of corrosion eating the lines or a compromised canister, the system
will then signal a leak code. Auto repair shops fix such issues by finding the
leak and fixing or replacing the part and resetting the system.
In looking for auto repair shops,
make sure to ask for various certifications. Certification indicates that some
or all of the technicians meet basic standards of knowledge and competence in
specific technical areas. Make sure the certifications are current, but
remember that certification alone is no guarantee of good or honest work. Then, auto repair shops with experience
working on the same make or model of your vehicle is a great advantage.
