A
firing range is important if you want to attend a number of pistol
courses. Why? Because when it comes to firearms and firearm safety,
where you go shooting is just as important as the guns you shoot.
Here are some considerations when dealing with a firing range:
- Inspect designated shooting ranges. A good firing range has allocated space which has been designed with safety in mind. Space allotment is important so you can legally discharge a firearm while still abiding by the rules.
- Nothing beats supervised firing ranges. Range officers make a firing range safe. They monitor the behaviors of all shooters and they intervene in case any safety violations during a number of pistol courses. They can kick shooters from the firing range if they show unsafe and inappropriate behavior. They also control when to unload firearms when targets are being changed.
- Check ventilation. A good firing range has a good ventilation system. While you certainly do not want to be shot, you surely also do not want to breathe in lots of gun smoke. Its primary component, lead, can be hazardous to your health. Make sure that your firing range provides good ventilation to prevent such health hazard.
- Look for hand washing facilities. If smoke inhalation is bad for your health, so is ingestion of gunpowder remnants. It is always good to wash your hands thoroughly after shooting to eliminate any lead residue on your hands. Provisions for hand washing is best placed somewhere close to the firing line aside from the restrooms.
Keep
these four things in mind when scouting for a firing range. If any of
these four is missing, pack your gear and leave. These are the basics
and everything should be present in order for a firing range to be
considered professional and safe.
On
top of everything, choose a firing range that you feel safe in. Your
safety should never be compromised as you enroll in a number of survival
of the fittest pistol courses.
