Reflexology and Swedish Massage for Immune-Compromised Patients

Reflexology and Swedish massage are often are often in the list of advisable or proper massage therapy for immune-compromised patients. Swedish massage is done with the light technique and is focused throughout the body; reflexology on the other hand focuses on the sole of the feet and has an original technique of applying pressure to stimulate the brain and send signals to the body.

Reflexology

During the process of dialysis, chemotherapy and other intensive procedures, the patient experiences symptoms such as dizziness, nausea and vomiting. As patients undergo certain procedures, the body weakens and experiences other kinds of problems. Reflexology aids in returning the balance of the body functions. The pressure in reflexology provides positive stimulation that can increase blood circulation and increase the patient’s pain threshold.  According to massage therapy experts, reflexology is best done before the intensive procedure to reduce anxiety and stress; in that way, they are given more hope or sense of increased self-esteem to help them cope with their condition.

Swedish massage

Swedish massage is done by rendering light, long strokes at certain parts of the body. The light strokes are called effleurage and are safe for immune-compromised patients. The strokes are not painful and/or disturbing especially for extreme ages. This technique will aid in healing, fast recovery, increasing blood flow and decreasing anxiety. A simple stroke on these patients mean a lot since they are experiencing a different kind of pain.

Comparing the two, Swedish massage can be done before reflexology; the technique done in Swedish massage can also cool down extremely tired patients and gradually brings back the normal heart rate, respiratory rate and other vital signs. When a patient can tolerate reflexology, the therapy may be given; but is little pressure is applied and pain is felt, better jump to a lighter and more dependable technique. Before doing so, it is best to consult your doctor.
