Data Transfer: PC to Mac Migration

PC to Mac Migration is relatively easy as long as there is a Mac version software to open the files you are moving from your PC. If you don’t have this yet, you might want to install those programs first before proceeding with the PC to Mac migration.

PC to Mac migration can be done through a direct connection or network connection. Of course, you have to connect your old PC to your Mac either way.

Direct Connection

Direct connection refers to moving the files by connecting your Mac directly to your PC.  Make sure that both units are turned on before doing these simple steps for your direct connection PC to Mac Migration.

1. Connect your Mac to your PC with an Ethernet cable.
2. Access the Finder on your Mac.
3. Choose Connect to Server from the Go menu to open the window.
4. Type your PC's network address into the Server Address text box using one of the following formats:
   • smb://DNSname/ShareName
   • smb://IPaddress/ShareName.
5. Click Connect.
6. Follow the on-screen instructions to enter your PC's Workgroup name, user name, password, and the volume or folder you wish to access.
7. Open your PC  volume and drag and drop files directly from it to anywhere on your Mac.
8. Once you are done, drag your PC volume to the Trash.

Network Connection

Network connection refers to moving the files by connecting your Mac to your PC when they are on one network. Again, make sure that both units are turned on before proceeding with your PC to Mac Migration.

1. Connect both computers to the Internet.
2. Access the Finder, select Connect to Server from the Go menu.
3. In the window that opens, type your PC's network address in the Server Address text box using the following format: smb://ServerName/ShareName.
4. If that doesn't work, you can simply select the name of your PC in the window if it appears.
5. Click Connect.
6. Type in your PC's Workgroup name, your user name, and your password when asked. Your PC volume should appear on your Mac Desktop right after doing this step.
7. Select the volume or folder that you want to access.
8. Open the volume and drag and drop the files directly from it to any location on your Mac.
9. Once you are done, drag your PC volume to the Trash.

These are the two ways of doing PC to Mac Migration. If you are doing the reverse, i.e., Mac to PC Migration, all you have to do is to reverse the process. Mac to PC Migration is also relatively easy as long as you have software installed on your PC to open the files from your Mac.
