VoIP: The Future of Phone Service

Phone calls are important in Tampa. Be it for personal or business use, our phone service is a large part of our lives. As technology progresses, phone service providers seek to upgrade the quality of the services they offer. Now, you can make phone calls just by having internet access. Say hello to VoIP.

What is VoIP?

Voice over Internet Protocol or VoIP is a kind of telecommunications technology that uses internet access in making voice calls and audio–video transmissions. This is opposed to traditional phone service wherein landlines are used.

The advent of Wi-Fi hotspots made the internet access in Tampa stronger which makes VoIP a very nice alternative to traditional phone service offerings. Wi-Fi enables mobile phones to connect to the internet as long as there is a signal. This is not hard since public Wi-Fi network hotspots can be found almost anywhere today: parks, malls, coffee shops, clubs, etc.

The idea is if you make calls locally or internationally through VoIP, you only need internet access and \ a VoIP service provider from Tampa. As compared to paying cell phone plans, paying your VoIP service provider costs a lot cheaper because Wi-Fi is essentially free when you go to a public hotspot anyway. The vision is to be able to make phone calls through Wi-Fi when you have a signal then automatically switch to cellular service when Wi-Fi is out of range.

Advantages of mobile VoIP over the common phone service systems

Generally, mobile VoIP technology will make multimedia communications easier, more convenient and cheaper, here are some specific applications:

  • VoIP over wireless LAN – using VoIP through wireless LAN instead of traditional phone systems to make internal phone calls in companies, schools, hospitals, hotels and businesses will offer a lot of flexibility. You can roam around freely inside the area and still connect easily to make calls.

  • The use of WiMAX for maximum coverage – WiMAX is like a long ranged Wi-Fi capable of providing coverage to an entire metropolitan and rural area. With this, VoIP calls will be accessible to entire cities.

All in all mobile VoIP technology is very promising. There are still a lot of technical areas where improvement is a must, but the main issue is security. Using a cellular plan means you make calls through a closed network that telecommunication companies provide whereas a Wi-Fi call uses airwaves to transmit signals and are easier to intercept. Making a VoIP call through a public Wi-Fi is also riskier because a public network is less secure. When these factors are taken care of, VoIP as a phone service might be a huge step closer to being widely used.
