IMPROVING SPORTS PERFORMANCE THROUGH HYPNOTHERAPY

Many of us have heard of the term “being in the zone.” In sports, this is a natural state of trance in which everything on the field or court seems to slow down and the game comes easily to the player.  Mental focus, concentration and visualization are critical to success in any endeavor, and sports in particular. Hypnotherapy and sports performance can greatly increase confidence, consistency and ability.

Reduction of anxiety and stress. While combining hypnotherapy and sports performance for relaxation and stress reduction purposes and increasing performance, one study found that there are three main causes for anxiety. The first cause of stress is the fundamental nature of sports, which is competition. Competition in sports causes anxiety in athletes. Second, the stress of comparing performance to those you are competing against. And third, the pressure that athletes put on themselves to perform. Thankfully, hypnotherapy is here to help athletes manage anxiety and stress.

Creates positive expectations. Hypnotherapy follows on sports performance through mental rehearsal which helps create positive expectation. Expectation is a powerful force in human motivation and behavior. We're all seeking to fulfill our expectations, good and bad, all of the time. For example, if you go into a meeting expecting it to be boring, it's highly likely to be tedious beyond belief. If you go into the same meeting expecting to hear information that will be useful to you, you'll probably find it more interesting. Hypnotherapy is a partner in improving this aspect of sports performance.

Psyching up method. Hypnotherapy has been shown to be very beneficial for the sports performance of any athlete. Before competition, the athlete is taught to close their eyes and really focus on their goal. They picture themselves accomplishing their goal and when they are able to imagine it, they attempt this goal. This method is referred to as "psyching up." This "psyching up" technique is found to be most successful when short bursts of energy are needed such as a defensive football player tackling his opponent or a weight-lifter. Imagery has also been shown to prepare the athlete for competition.

Even if you are not training for the Olympics or competing as a professional athlete, remember that hypnotherapy can help you attain higher levels of sports performance in whatever game you play.
