Self Storage and Moving Storage: Which One Is For Me?

ImageDeciding on which storage facilities to choose can be challenging. There are those that offer self storage and moving storage services. What are their similarities and differences?
  • Self storage and moving storage units come in various sizes – from something as small as a closet to something as big as your two car garage.
  • Both offer high degrees of security in the premises of their storage facilities. Self storage units are inside well-guarded buildings; there are 24 hour roving security guards and CCTV cameras. Some units have an additional level of protection because they have external security doors aside from the internal locks on each unit. Moving storage units, on the other hand, can be held inside secured storage facilities or your home. Security features for moving storage units at home include sophisticated doors and locks.
  • Both self storage and moving storage companies have packages that fit one’s financial capabilities. Additional costs for transportation, gas, and moving truck rental are added for moving storage.
  • Self storage facilities have climate controlled units which gives premium protection to items that are sensitive to temperature, moisture, and humidity. Climate controlled units are not usually offered in moving storage facilities.
  • Self storage facilities normally do not allow packing and unpacking in their premises. You need to transport items to and from your place every time you need to get something. The same rule may apply to moving units in storage facilities. This is in contrast with moving storage units that are placed beside your house. You can pack and unpack at your own time and pace.
  • Moving storage units can be rented or bought. Units in storage facilities are usually rented while units that are taken near one’s home are usually bought.
  •  There are moving storage companies which offer the option of moving storage units to another location, even across different states. This option comes with a high price, though.
  • Last but not the least, moving storage units are easily accessible, whereas visits to units in storage facilities need to be scheduled ahead of time. A call at least two days in advance is the typical protocol for moving storage facilities. This is because moving units are usually stacked on top of one another so moving is necessarily done. On the other hand, self storage units in storage facilities can be accessed anytime you want. Advanced notice is not necessary because units are separated from one another.

The choice between self storage and moving storage depends on you and your needs. The good thing is that you can make an informed decision now. For more questions, contact the storage facility nearest you.
