It is common knowledge
that driving under the influence contributes to traffic collisions; however,
most people believe that drivers must be "drunk" to be considered a
hazard behind the wheel. Although a person may appear sober, if they have consumed any amount
of alcohol, their ability to safely operate a motor vehicle has usually been
impaired.
If someone you know has been
drinking and is about to drive, make every effort to stop them. If possible,
take their car keys away, you may save a life. Regardless of whether you're
issued a traffic ticket for a moving violation such as breaking the speed limit
or a driving under the influence and such as parking in front of a fire hydrant,
some cases escalate to the point of needing legal advice.
This is particularly true if
getting one more ticket will put you over your state's point limit and result
in heavy penalties such as your driver's license being suspended. Here, it might
be worth retaining a traffic attorney to help you avoid that fate. Traffic
attorneys often devote their entire practice to traffic tickets, sometimes
handling hundreds per day. Some even offer a money-back guarantee if they fail
to get your fine reduced or keep the ticket off your record. Traffic attorneys will
help you explain your situation. Maybe you were speeding to get to a hospital,
or maybe you parked in front of a fire hydrant due to a sudden emergency.
Whatever the case, you want to be able to explain it to the judge. Perhaps you
really don't have an excuse other than negligence, in which case a traffic attorney
might be able to help you get a judgment with which you can be satisfied.
A good and honest traffic
attorney will inquire whether it even makes sense for you to fight this ticket
and/or hire a traffic attorney. For example, if the ticket carries no points or
you have an out-of-state license and points do not transfer, it usually does
not make sense to hire a traffic attorney. Another important consideration is
the comfort level you get when speaking with the law firm. Were they responsive
to questions? Were you given understandable and sensible answers? Were they
knowledgeable? Were they honest with you about the prospects for success? Were
they patient? If you do not feel
comfortable, then it’s time to make another telephone call.
