Ins and Outs of Valve Bodies

Most new transmissions have automatic safeguards on their valve bodies to prevent you from destroying the transmission by accident. They will upshift and downshift even when you manually select a specific gear as the engine speed nears the red line or the stalling level. This means that you can get maximum engine performance by selecting first gear.

Experts don’t recommend this as an everyday practice and are not responsible for any damage that occurs if you try it. There are ways on how you can detect whether the valve bodies are already faulty and may need repairs or replacements.

1.       Worn fluid causes the lubrication to lose its viscosity, which decreases the level of protection the transmission fluid passes through the valve bodies. You can easily prevent this by checking and changing your transmission fluid on the appropriate schedule. This is generally done every 15,000 to 30,000 miles, unless needed sooner based on the use of your vehicle. If you do a lot of heavy hauling, you work your standard or automatic transmission harder and will need to change the fluids more frequently.

2.       The transmission valve bodies controls the point at which gears are shifted. The valve bodies work together with the governor or throttle of your engine to determine appropriate speeds for shifting gears. If the transmission valve bodies are faulty, it will usually result in your automatic transmission not being able to shift gears and may also result in a lot of smoke from your transmission or manifold area.

3.       Remember that valve bodies become faulty in several areas such as the vacuum pumps. If you intend to replace your valve bodies, you can first place the actuating rod into the hole of the new transmission modulator valve and then carefully insert the valve into the receptacle hole. As you insert the new modulator, you will probably hear a snapping sound which indicates that the O-ring has been sealed. Reinstall the bracket on the modulator and secure it with the bolts. A vacuum pump and stand are among the most useful tools any shop can have for troubleshooting automatic transmissions.

As valve bodies wear out, issues become more common; thus knowing how to use the right tools will be increasingly crucial skills for technicians.
