Guidelines to Your New Garage Door

New garage doors are good investments in making home improvement projects; especially when recouping value by the time the house sells. The right garage door can make or break many of those curb-appeal enhancements.

A new garage door should cost significantly less than the amount it may add to the value of your house. Making decisions between standard wooden or steel doors will depend on the style and precise dimensions, two single doors may or may not be any more expensive than one double door.

Talk Size and Space. Swing-out carriage-house doors or sliding barn doors are a good choice if you need to keep the ceiling clear or if you want their distinctive look. Otherwise, the most popular option by far is the sectional roll-up door. Roll-up doors must be measured with the space at the top of your garage door opening and ceiling or overhead framing as the basis. Standard track require headroom so better get to know the type of garage to know which tracks should be installed for your new garage door.

Know your style. The door that suits you is the new garage door that suits your home and comfort. Most styles, whether traditional or contemporary, feature panels, trim, and other detailing. Doors with true frame-and-panel construction tend to be sturdier than those with decorative detail that is merely glued or nailed on. If you live in a bungalow, roll-ups are best for you, but if you live in taller types of homes, swing open is a good idea, too.

Work with quality materials. Common garage door materials are wood, steel and aluminum. Wood offers a charm and authenticity that other materials merely mimic. However, frequent repainting and refinishing is needed for wooden garage doors. Steel, on the other hand, is the more preferable choice when you talk about easy maintenance. Still, steel rusts easily and touchups should be done often. Aluminum is common due to its rugged and rust proof feature, but because of its light weight, damages may easily be noticed.

With all these guidelines for your new garage door, you can never go wrong. It is highly recommended for you to consult a professional when in doubt about your choices.
