Choosing the Crown Molding for Your Ceiling

indexCrown moldings have the ability to make a dull room look different. They can even make a small room with a low ceiling look bigger than the actual size thanks to their horizontal lines. But before you can reap the benefits that crown moldings bring, you must first find the crown molding that will suit your room.

There are two important factors to consider when choosing a crown molding. The first is size and proportion, and the second one is profiled and shape.

Size and Proportion of Your Crown Molding

The rule of the thumb says that smaller rooms need smaller crown moldings. However, crown molding installers discourage the use of moldings smaller than 3.5 inches no matter what the size of the room is.

These small crowns simply look lost even when installed in very small rooms. Instead of using them in ceilings, 3.5 inch crown moldings are better used as applications, additions on columns, headers or frames.

A crown molding with a size of 4.5 inches to 7 inches is the most ideal one to use for a standard ceiling height of 8 feet to 9 feet. This size gives the look that everyone has been waiting for: a nice clean visible separation of walls from the ceiling. For higher ceilings, a crown molding with a size of 6 inches to 10 inches would be great. For lower ceilings, however, make sure you pick a crown molding that sits on the ceiling than the wall. This type of crown molding creates an illusion of a higher ceiling.

Profile and Shape of Your Crown Molding

Always prioritize a crown molding that would blend with the style and character of the room where it will be installed. Look at your furniture line, art pieces, and other home interior decorations before buying crown moldings. You can choose among the different profiles of crown molding that represent various styles. Some of these include traditional, transitional, contemporary, and modern crown moldings. It is important that the crown molding of your choice blend with the other pieces in the room to achieve a unified look; one that is pleasing to the eyes. For example, an ornamental crown molding installed in a modern-themed room will certainly not result to an eye candy.

Remember, crown moldings cannot be covered up by any furniture. They are always visible and can make or break the look of your home. Your choice matter so choose wisely!
