Cutting Down Costs with the Right Moving Supplies

Most movers, especially the do-it-yourself kind, are so happy to finally arrive in their new home that they don't even mind that the dinner plates are chipped, there's a scratch on the coffee table, or their favorite lampshade is bruised and battered. But there's no reason your household goods should become casualties of the move. With a little care and planning, and the right set of moving supplies, you and your stuff will both arrive in mint condition.

Here are some tips to get started:

·      Make a List.

Write everything down! You'll thank yourself later. Before you pack even one box, create a simple record keeping system and the moving supplies you are to need. Create a computer-printed list of numbers with a space to write the contents. Or have a spiral-bound notebook for the process. Place a number on every box you pack and list the contents on your list.

·      Start off with boxes.

Make sure you select the right box for the right items. The small moving box is used for packing books, tapes, videos, tools, small appliances, and small kitchen items. The medium moving box is used for packing items such as smaller stereo equipment, kitchen items, linens, and toys. The large moving box is used for packing linens and other oversized items.

·      Prepare all the necessary moving supplies.

Some common moving supplies which constitute packing kits include dish packs, various sized moving boxes, custom cartons, mirror cartons, wardrobe cartons, and mattress boxes. Other moving supplies include bundles of packing paper, rolls of tape, bubble wrap and stretch-wrap.

You'll need strong plastic packing tape to close up the boxes securely. Use unprinted newsprint (newspaper can stain your items) or packing paper or bubble wrap to wrap and cushion household good. Again, you'll need more moving supplies than you think, so get extra so the packing can go smoothly. Return any unused supplies after the truck is packed.

Another way to save money and time, and to ensure you have all the basic moving supplies required to pack up your household, check out complete packing kits. Moving supplies and packing kits can be purchased for particular rooms or for entire households.

For a final tip: do a comparison on total cost if items were purchased separately. Also, do watch out for any seasonal sales. Happy moving!
