After
being convicted of driving under the influence, one of the instant
punishments is a suspended license. The law enforcer that caught you
will immediately revoke your driving rights and get your license right
then and there, given that you’ve failed the sobriety test. If it’s your
first offense, license suspension usually takes less than six months.
If it’s a subsequent conviction, it can take a year or even more.
Immediate Action
Hiring
a DUI lawyer will help you through the process of getting your license
back earlier, if possible. But if you’ve been proven guilty, you may
just have to wait for the mandatory time frame for license suspension.
We all know how much of a hassle it can be to not be able to drive to
work or anywhere. However, despite this inconvenience, you must not dare
to drive with a suspended license. Or else, you’re in for much more
trouble.
Driving with a suspended
license has its penalties depending on the state. The most common
penalties include paying a fine, an extended period of suspension plus
some jail time. If it’s the first offense for driving with a suspended
license, you can be slapped with an additional 3 months suspension, $500
fine and around 10 days in jail. If it’s a second offense, there is 6
months additional suspension, $500 fine and around 6 months to 1 year in
jail. If it’s the third offense, you will be charged with a felony, 1
year additional suspension, $1000 fine and 1 year in jail.
Don’t
even dare driving with a suspended license, because the fact of the
matter is, being charged with DUI (driving under the influence) is
serious enough. You have become a danger to other drivers on the road
and revoking your license because of it is just a fitting punishment.
So, if you dare commit another law violation by driving with a suspended
license, expect the punishment to be more.
Having
a DUI lawyer to defend your case will be extremely helpful. Well, you
should have one already when you were charged with DUI. Talk to your
lawyer about the current charges against you. The DUI defense attorney
should present and review your options with you so you can regain your
license in a shorter amount of time, if it’s permissible. And maybe,
lessen the hefty fine or jail time.
