You
may have not noticed it, but the cables of your phone systems have been
changed from a two-pair cable to one with a six twisted pair. These
cables are known as Cat5, short for category 5. They have replaced
standard phone lines because they are capable of transferring high-speed
data such as internet broadband services. Cat-5 cable systems support
frequencies up to 100 MHz and speeds up to 1000 Mbps.
The Old Cable System
Most
residential telephone wiring installed from 1950 to 2000 contained one
red, one black, one green, and one yellow insulated 22 or 24 gauge
copper conductors. The red and black pairs of conductors, as well as the
green and yellow ones, are twisted together respectively.
The Cat 5 Cable System
After
2000, most phone systems already underwent Cat 5 installation. Unlike
the old cable system, the Cat 5 cable contains six twisted pairs. The
red and black pairs as well as the yellow and green pairs still have
counterparts, nonetheless. The blue on white, white on blue twisted pair
of the cat 5 is equivalent to the green and red twisted pair of the old
one, while the orange on white, white on orange twisted pair is
equivalent to the black and yellow twisted pair.
Cat 5 Installation
You
need a cat 5 cable system if you want to have all the rooms in your
house ready for both phone and internet connections. Cat 5 installation
is not difficult to do even though its jack is set-up differently from
the standard telephone wiring. All you have to ensure is that you have a
special wire punch tool to seat the wire strands into the jack.
Just
a quick note about cat 5 installation: always keep the color conversion
that we have discussed earlier in mind. Reversing or crossing any of
these connections will cause phone systems to short or stop working.
Advantages of Switching to Cat 5 Cables
Aside
from easy installation and better transmission, Cat 5 cables also offer
the advantage of cost efficiency. The cost difference between cat 5 and
the other types of cables amount to as much as 40%. This, while
maintaining up to four times transmission speed. How cost-effective can a
 set of cables be?
So
be it at home or in the office, your phone systems will definitely
benefit from the use of cat 5 cable systems. Think of cat 5 installation
 today.
