BOAT STORAGE TIPS FOR THE WINTER SEASON

The winter season is upon us, and if you haven’t taken your boat out of the water yet then it’s likely time to do so. But boat storage for the winter isn’t as simple as pulling it out of the water and hauling it into your backyard or to a boat storage facility. Both winter weather conditions and long periods of storage can put wear and tear on your boat, and can end up causing your boat to require costly repairs and painstaking maintenance once spring and summer roll back around.

Here are some tips to help you store your boat this winter:

1. Keep it clean! Get it spic and span. Once it's hauled out, remove the bilge drain plug immediately. Then give your boat's hull and decks a thorough scrubbing to remove gunk, grime, slime and barnacles. Leave plenty of time for everything to dry before it goes into storage containers. Give the interior a thorough cleaning, too. Clear out the refrigerator, lockers, and any other materials that can spoil or mildew over winter.

2. Consider climate-controlled storage containers. A climate controlled boat storage unit, or indoor heated storage, is the best way to ensure your boat is protected from the often harsh winter conditions. Both the temperature and humidity will be controlled in your unit, thus preventing freezing and the accumulation of excess moisture on your boat.

3. Consider convenience and lease terms. Boat owners like the flexibility of being able to pick up their boat at any time. In addition to offering easy, drive-up access to our boat storage buildings, also consider boat storage that offer flexible lease terms. Choose indoor or outdoor boat storage based upon your needs. No matter what you choose, your boat will be ready to go when you are.

4. Know the downsides. It can be extremely expensive to rent a large space for boat storage. The price goes up if the boat storage facility offers climate control, extensive security features, and more benefits. Storage rates often increase along with the size of the boat making it extremely expensive to store large boats that are perfect for families.
