On Wearing Ball Gowns

It seems impossible to think that no one in this country knows what a ball gown is. We have been bombarded with images of ball gowns ever since we were kids thanks to Disney. But is it still practical to wear a ball gown these days? The answer is YES. It will just depend on the occasion where you will wear it into.

imagesBall Gowns Defined!

Simply put, a ball gown is formal dress usually with a length that reaches the floor. Ball gowns usually have a low neckline, fit tightly against the upper body, then blooms out into a full skirt made possible by layers of petticoat underneath. Compared to other formal dresses, ball gowns can be extremely expensive and this is not surprising as the kind of occasions at which ball gowns are worn are usually those that are thrown for the elite and wealthy.

When to Wear Ball Gowns

Ball gowns are worn traditionally in formal white tie occasions. However, ball gowns have evolved since. Women wear ball gowns for debuts, proms, weddings, banquets, gala, and even non-formal dress-up occasions. Most occasions specify the type of dress to wear. You can easily find this on the invitation. If you are confused, though, it is best to ask the organizer once you RSVP. Do not be embarrassed to double check. It is better to do that before the event, than to show at the venue wearing a dress not fit for the occasion.

Usual accessories include opera-length gloves, clutch bags, stoles or cloaks, and fine jewelry. Shoes are also important. Shoes change a woman’s height and affect how the dress meets the floor. Most ball gowns have an intended height of shoes so as not to ruin the over-all look of the dress. If you are to wear a ball gown, make sure you wear the proper set of accessories from head to foot.

Where to Get Ball Gowns

You can buy your own ball gown or rent one if your budget is not enough. There are a lot of ball gowns that can be tailored, bought, or rented depending on what you want, what you need, and how much you are willing to pay. As what we have said a while ago, ball gowns can be pretty expensive, especially if you want yours to be custom-made.
